Sustainable coffee supply chain management: a case study in buon me thuot xity, saklak, vietnam

This paper aims to analyze and discuss the evolution towards sustainable coffee supply chain and its management in Vietnam. Coffee is a major agricultural export commodity of Vietnam with the export value accounts for 3% of national GDP in 2014 and provides a livelihood for approximately 2.6 million people. However, the sector is facing enormous challenges as the current farming methods and processing infrastructure have been unsustainable resulting in many catastrophic impacts on the environment such as deforestation and soil degradation that have the potential to lead to a decrease in the quality of coffee beans. Using a case study in Buon Me Thuot City, Daklak, Vietnam, the paper analyses the key factors influencing the sustainable coffee supply chain management in Vietnam. Our analysis confirms that although productivity is high, and farmers have positive experiences in this sector, sustainability issues are emerging. For instance, the farmers have experienced soil erosion and a lack of water and as such are now more willing to incorporate sustainability initiatives in their production and processing.

Effects of shade and input management on economic performance of small-scale Peruvian coffee systems.

We study aims to to address the following research topics of study: (i) what is the economic performance of small scale coffee systems under different shade and input levels? and (ii) what are the options to enhance the economic performance of coffee agroforestry systems? We hypothesize that the benefits of high shade low input systems are at least similar to unshaded, high input coffee plantations. To this regard, we analyse the economic performance of Peruvian coffee farming practices in the department of San Martín, which is one of the major coffee producing regions of the country (Valqui et al., 2015). Here we compare productivity, costs, net income and benefit-cost ratio of small-scale coffee plantations and link this to shade and input management practices. The information compiled in this study can be useful to enhance the economic performance of smallholder coffee agroforestry systems, especially in the face of current and future challenges posed on smallholder coffee farmers worldwide.

Characterization of cocoa production, income diversification and shade tree management along a climate gradient in ghana

This study characterized current cocoa production, income diversification and shade tree management along a climate gradient within the cocoa belt of Ghana. The objectives were to 1) compare existing production and income diversification between dry, mid and wet climatic regions, and 2) identify shade trees in cocoa agroforestry systems and their distribution along the climatic gradient. This study highlights the need for optimum shade level recommendation to be climatic region specific.

Achieving Sustainable Cultivation of Coffee - Breeding and Quality Traits

Introduction:

Coffee is one of the most widely traded commodities in the world, with Coffea arabica and C. canephora together accounting for 99% of the global coffee bean production. Despite its popularity as a beverage and its economic importance, sustainable coffee production currently faces a number of challenges. This is primarily due to an over reliance on a relatively small number of varieties vulnerable to a range of abiotic and biotic stresses, as well as the increasing expectations of quality amongst consumers. These challenges are addressed in Achieving sustainable cultivation of coffee.
Part 1 focuses on advances in understanding plant physiology and ensuring genetic diversity. These advances provide the basis for chapters summarizing developments in breeding improved varieties of Arabica and Robusta coffee.
Part 2 reviews our understanding of the chemical composition, sensory properties and the potential nutraceutical benefits of coffee. Chapters also look at wider quality and sustainability issues.

An exploratory study of managerial approaches to food waste mitigation in coffee shops

The hospitality industry generates substantial amounts of food waste. Although the issue has been politically recognised, it remains under-researched. Studies are limited in number and restricted in sectoral and geographical coverage. They have attempted to quantify and characterise food waste in hospitality ventures while the managerial approaches to its reduction have not been scrutinised. The coffee shop sub-sector of the hospitality industry has been entirely excluded from analysis. This study examined food waste in UK coffee shops through the managerial lens. While food waste represents a significant challenge, the managerial approaches to its minimisation are conservative and focus on disposal, rather than prevention. Lack of governmental support, imperfect legislation, irresponsible consumer behaviour and restricted internal resources inhibit application of more advanced managerial approaches. To enhance the effectiveness of food waste management within the sub-sector, targeted policy interventions designed to strengthen corporate commitments and facilitate pro-environmental changes in consumer behaviour are necessary.

Climate change and coffee: assessing vulnerability by modeling future climate suitability in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico

Coffee production has long been culturally and economically important in Puerto Rico. However, since peaking in the late nineteenth century, harvests are near record lows with many former farms abandoned. While value-added markets present new opportunities to reinvigorate the industry, regional trends associated with climate change may threaten the ability to produce high-quality coffee. Here, we discuss the history of coffee in Puerto Rico, outline important bioclimatic parameters, and model current and future habitat suitability using statistically downscaled climate data. Model projections suggest that warming trends may surpass important temperature thresholds during the coming decades. Under high (A2) and mid-low (A1B) emission scenarios for 20112040, Puerto Rico is projected to exceed mean annual temperature parameters for growth of Coffea arabica. Warming and drying trends may accelerate after 2040 and could result in top producing municipalities losing 6084% of highly suitable growing conditions by 2070. Under the A2 scenario, Puerto Rico may only retain 24 km2 of highly suitable conditions by 20712099. High temperatures and low precipitation levels can result in diminished quality and yields, as well as increased exposure and sensitivity to certain insects and diseases. The climate data and models used are based on best current understanding of climate and emission interactions with results best interpreted as projected climate trends rather than predictions of future weather. Planning, innovation, and adaptation provide promising avenues to address current and future socioecological challenges while building a model of sustainable and resilient coffee production in Puerto Rico and throughout the region.

Gender equality and coffee: minimizing the gender gap in agriculture - white paper

This white paper explores the gender inequality that exists in coffee, creating inefficiencies in the value chain. The Specialty Coffee Association demonstrate the gender gap in coffee, presenting four main issues: distribution of labour, income, land ownership and leadership & decision-making power. Moreover, it asserts that the specialty coffee industry has a tremendous opportunity to minimize the gender gap in agriculture to the benefit of the coffee supply and the different actors involved. In order to do so, the paper presents five concrete recommendations that can be implemented to make the chain more gender-equal. This paper is particularly interesting for companies wanting to learn from organizations who have already started this important work.

Turning farmers into business partners through value co-creation projects: insights from the coffee supply chain

This study examines the empowerment of low-power, vulnerable stakeholders of global, complex supply chains as one effective strategy to increase value co-creation and to moderate the vulnerabilities that threaten supply chain resilience. Previous scholars have indicated the necessity of investigating the concept of value co-creation further by including various stakeholder perspectives and suggesting systems of evaluation. This research thus focuses on low-power smallholder farmers within the coffee supply chain by qualitatively evaluating the effectiveness of value co-creation projects. The study also analyzes the extent of development and the nature of empowerment initiatives designed conjointly by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and coffee roasters that are addressed to farmers. The mixed qualitative methodology includes a literature review, interviews, focus groups, and content analysis of 20 value co-creation projects conducted in various developing and emerging coffee-producing countries. The research proposes a theoretical framework employed to conduct focus groups with Brazilian coffee farmers. This framework empirically demonstrates that these farmers are in the process of becoming business partners of the coffee supply chain thanks to various empowerment initiatives, common to most of the analyzed projects, that appear to moderate specific vulnerabilities of the coffee supply chain and therefore benefit supply chain resilience.
